Janus 13 saw two big ‘firsts’ for the magazine. Richard Manton wrote the first of his many popular contributions and Paula Meadows made her first appearance as ‘Lesley’. 

Richard Manton asked us to close our eyes and imagine the sort of young woman we thought most deserving of the tanning of a lifetime. He suggested we might like to ‘bamboo the bare bottom of a promiscuous boyishly cropped young wife like Lesley’. On the opposite page she looks back at us in dismay as her knickers are pulled down. Undeniably powerful stuff! Paula would return again as Lesley in issue 21 in a follow up story by Richard and the first of her many wonderful illustrations featured in issue 14. 

The Caretaker Strikes Back is a photofantasy featuring the sweet model that would go on to be ‘Blisset’ in the St Winifred’s Trilogy (see issue 15). Amongst the stories ‘The Estate Agent’s Schoolgirl Wife’ by James Kenway stands out and a good crop of readers letters include contributions on strapping techniques, slapped legs and the importance of humiliation and pain. 

In Janus 13 the magazine took a giant stride towards the format that would serve it well for the next 25 years.
